Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.
A while ago, I had a christian ask me if I thought it was wrong for her to hang out with her “old group of friends.” You know, the group that she used to rebel with, party with, sin with. After all, she wasnt going to get drunk when she went out with them on Friday nights, but he thought she could use it as a way to be a testimony to them.
Despite the fact that i told her that this was a terrible idea, she did it anyway. The result of this was not what she had hoped for. Instead of her leading others to Jesus, she backslid in her walk. No surprise to me, but she was surprised. You see, there is a difference between reaching a lost and dying world, and standing in the path of the lost and dying world. We need to be willing to swim upstream, to not fit in, to go against the flow here. Rest assured, if you feel like you are swimming upstream then its likely that you are going in the right direction. We need to love those who are dying in their sins, but we must draw a line within our souls to not follow their path. You are the light of the world!
It was evident to me that this young girl felt that she was missing out on the things that the world had to offer, and was trying to use christianity to justify her actions.
Maybe you are not struggling the same way that that young lady was, but notice that this scripture says “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.” When our delight is in the Lord, we purpose to do His works, we are delighted to follow His commands, and obey His voice. It is then that we wont be thirsty for the things of this world. “He shall be like a tree, Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.”
God honors those who honor Him. I pray that our delight, our happiness, and our purpose would be found in Him. I pray that we would meditate on His Word, and abide in His grace. He promises to fill us, refresh us, and prosper our lives as we seek Him with all of our hearts.
