9 Easy Tips to Help You Stick to Your Budget

9 budget tips

Welcome back to Wednesday Q & A.  Today we are answering budget questions!

I started a budget in January, but haven’t kept up with it since then.  How do I get back on track?

1.  Remember, a budget is just a plan for where your money is going to be allocated.  It can be modified and changed along the way. If you forgot a budget item, just add it now.

2.  At the beginning of each month, fill in your budget for the up coming month to lay out where your money will be spent.  Try to stay within your parameters of each category as best as possible.

3.  Make sure your spouse is on board.   Meet once a week to monitor the progress, and go over what was spent and saved.

4.  Make a list of things you can do instead of spend money and do them when tempted to spend.  You can read a book, go for a walk, have a friend for coffee, or work on your budget.  😉  My husband always says, “It’s not a good deal unless you really need it.”  It’s very true, even if it only cost a few cents.

5.  Stay away from places that tempt you.  If you like to go to the mall – stay home, go out for coffee – have coffee at home, run through the drive through for your kids – prepare a meal at home.    Just steer clear of these temptations.

6.  Break it down.  Look at your big financial goals and break them down into smaller weekly or monthly ones.  It may look impossible to pay off that $3,000 credit card bill next year, but when you break down, it’s $250 a month or $57 per week.  Not so bad now, right?

7.  Use cash for purchases.  Handing the cashier a credit card doesn’t have the same effect as parting with cash.  It makes you think twice about what you are trading that cash for.  Think about how much you have in your budget for each item, and stick to it.

8.  Don’t fret.  If something came up, or you are over for the month, don’t get discouraged.  It’s not going to be perfect, and it will take a couple months to get easier.  Just reevaluate, and make changes as needed.

9.  Celebrate!  It will get easier to maintain and keep track of.  Take the time to celebrate those months that are taking you in the right direction.
