Food for thought…a church building is nothing unless God is in it

While reading a book on the Cathedrals of England I was enamored at their beauty. The design, dimensions, grandeur and splendor is really too much. I feel a little overwhelmed in them though. But with all their beauty I cannot help but wonder ‘what of this beauty if not to be filled with souls?’ When Solomon finished the temple to The Lord and it was completely bedecked with gold and jewels, yet it was not a residence then. It wasn’t until Solomon invited Gods presence into that very sacred place that God came down and consumed the sacrifice.
2 Chronicles 7:1-3 “Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the Lord filled the house. And the priests could not enter into the house of the Lord , because the glory of the Lord had filled the Lord’s house. And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the Lord upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised the Lord , saying , For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.” There was never a temple like it not will be and yet with all it’s splendor it was all in vain without the presence of God. Our attending a building we call a church is nothing except God meet us there. We can see friends, sing songs and even hear preaching but it’s all a puff of smoke without The Lord. We feel we cannot approach a Holy God because we fail so miserably in our efforts at true living. We neglect to remember that God doesn’t require perfection. He requires honesty. Not to dismiss true living for The Lord but much of what we think is good enough is dung on our shoes. Lord if I worship in a field or the biggest and most bedecked building, you care more for  what is coming out of my heart. I pray that true worship would invade our lives.
