Food for thought…Are You Afraid?

are you afraid

“God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

We can get fearful over many things. Health, finances, our children, our marriages, end times bible prophecy (yep I am scared of that).  Fear paralyzes us as Christians.  We are unable to move forward because we become focused on our surroundings and the fear of the unknown in our lives.   I have been there many times.

Fear causes us to doubt God’s sovereignty and ability in our lives.  I grew up in an Italian family that was always fearful, although they wouldnt use that word to describe themselves.  They would use the word “prepared”.  As I began walking with the Lord, I could see how this “preparation” stemmed from fear.  Watching horror movies as a kid really didnt help my fear problem either!

I have always watched the news, read the news, listened to the news.  I am always involved with knowing current events.  Sometimes, particularly our more recent events, the news can scare us.  Not knowing what will happen in our country, how we will fight ISIS, how we will protect our children, how we will survive a world war, these things cause us to worry.  These are the headlines, most Americans are reading them, and it leaves them frustrated, scared, and anxious.  But I have a hope…..

Take for example, Joshua. After the death of Moses, Joshua is called to lead the children of Israel to the promised land. God tells him “Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, I have given to you” Joshua 1:3.  All Joshua had to do was walk, God would do the rest.  Yet God still tells him twice in that chapter “Be strong and of good courage” “do not be afraid”.  God knows our frame, He knows that we are but dust.  He knows our struggles and our fears, and in His abundant love for us…He directs us.  All we have to do is follow. We may not know the future, but He does.  We may not know what will happen today, tomorrow, next year, twenty years from now, BUT He does. His plans for us are for peace, He created the world and all who inhabit it.  He knows our lives from beginning to end.
I have learned that fear is useless.  Do I still worry? Yes I do.  Do I still get scared? Of course I do.  But the cure for fear is prayer.  Any time I get scared, worried, anxious, I bring it to the cross and lay it at the feet of the one who holds the world in His hands, and who is sovereign over every single detail of my life.  So what do I have to fear? “The LORD is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1

Are you afraid, worried, anxious, disturbed, nervous? Bring it to Jesus, lay it at His feet, and experience the peace that He wants to give you. You wont find that peace anywhere else.
