Food for thought…Are You Passionate?

My soul yearns, even faints,
    for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
    for the living God

Psalm 84:2

I love when people are passionate. I come from an Italian family, they are passionate about a lot of things.  When people are passionate, they deeply care about something.  They spend a lot of their time learning, thinking and knowing about it.

I used to play basketball when I was in high school.  I was passionate about it.  I spent hours every day playing basketball.  It consumed so much of my time.  I went to camps, watched videos, watched games, I loved it! Last weekend I went to my niece’s basketball game. During the game, my sister in law was talking to me,  I was tuning her out.  Not because I wanted to, but because I was captivated by the game.  As she was talking to me, all I could think was…that was a foul, oh that shot didnt have enough spin on it, box out, move around, get open.  It brought me back to my basketball playing days.  Not to mention the referee was the same man that used to ref my games.  I had a great time.  But I couldnt think about anything but the game.  I went home and told my boys that I was going to teach them to play basketball, and they were going to be good because they were going to spend a lot of time practicing.  Each one of them gave out a loud “agghhh” sigh.

As I was telling my husband that I really want them to be basketball players, he bumped me back into reality and reminded me that far above teaching them to be basketball players, we needed to be passionate about teaching them the Word of God.  We should be longing for them to be disciples, missionaries, followers of Christ and that is what we should be training them for.

Often times we can be so passionate about things.  Like I said, I love passionate people, I love when someone takes the time to deeply care and learn about something.  People like that intrigue me.  Mostly because when someone is passionate, it can spark something in others.  The kids playing basketball, they were passionate, it sparked a fire in me and I remembered how much I loved basketball.

Have you ever talked to someone that is newly saved and they are completely on fire and passionate about Jesus? Your conversation with them, no matter what you are talking about, it always turns into something biblical.  I love it.  I look forward to those conversations, they get me fired up.

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.  And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” Deuteronomy 6

Ladies, we can be passionate about a lot of things.  Consider the things that take up your time. We can let a lot of things consume our time.  I pray that we would be completely consumed by Jesus, passionate about Him.  I pray that He would be what we talk about, what we think about, and what we teach our children.  Consider the scripture above.  “they shall be as frontlets between your eyes”  meaning, they should be foremost on your mind.   Think about that.  Loving the Lord our God should be foremost on our minds.  It should be what we think about when we lie down and when we rise up, it should be what consumes us, it should be what we are passionate about.  Am I like that? No, I can honestly say that I am not. I want to be. So my prayer is that GOD WOULD consume us.  That He would give us a love for Him like nothing that we have ever experienced before.  That we would desire Him far more than anything in this world….because He is worthy of it. Passionate people….I love them!
