Food For Thought..Cleaning Up

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

This was a harsh winter.  The snow in my driveway just kept getting piled high outback until it was almost as tall as my barn.  We have had so much snow.  Snow on top of more snow.  Followed by freezing cold weather that hasnt allowed any of it to thaw.  Finally after months we have had our first thaw.  I found so much stuff in my lawn that my kids lost this winter, and now I have to go out and clean it all up.  As the snow begins to melt, everything in my lawn looks pretty gross.  Toys that my kids have “lost” in the snow, treats that my dogs have left for me, dirt, grime, all of that is starting to be exposed as the snow melts away

As I was picking up shovels and gloves in my lawn the other day.  The Lord reminded me how he melts away things in our lives in order to expose the filth in our hearts that we cannot see.  He allows us to go through trials, and hardships in order to bring us to a full surrender to Him, and for our true character to be revealed.  Sometimes, that character is ugly, something that we dont want anyone to see.  But God brings us to a point of humilty, and desperation in order to clean up those dirty areas in our life to make us more like Him.

Recently, I was in a trial, and I honestly couldnt see beyond that trial.  I had no idea why God was testing me in such a way.  I couldnt understand why He would allow such a trial in my life.  And when I assumed that He was using that trial to work something out in the other person involved, He revealed to me the things in my own heart that I was unable to see.  He put me in the trial to melt away some of the distractions in my life in order to show me the real motives of my heart.  And they were ugly! I didnt want to see them, they broke me, humbled me, caused me to repent and ask God to clean them up.

We are usually quick to ask God to forgive us of our sins that we can see or that others can see.  But its the hidden things in our hearts that God also wants us to lay at His feet.  Ask Him to reveal to you the things in your heart that are not pleasing to Him.  Ask Him to show you the things that He desires to clean up and remove from your life.  After the pruning, cleaning, and molding, we will be more like our precious Savior, and that should be our heart’s desire.
