Food for Thought…..Does God Direct Your Steps?

Our friend, Gail, wrote this devotional, inspired by her mission trip to Zimbabwe.  Thanks, Gail, for sharing!!

In April, I went on a mission trip to Zimbabwe. One of the ladies on the mission team was a nurse from Australia named Sharen, but she liked to be called Chazzy. She was an amazing woman of God. She did a devotional on the second day of clinic that I will never forget. Much of this devotional is what I learned from Chazzy.

I try to take a twenty minute walk every day. My two legs take many steps on that twenty minute walk. One step is not very much, but when I walk twenty minutes those steps add up. I estimate that I walk about a mile. My steps lead me back home. The Christian walk is also made up of steps. It is not leaping nor is it standing still. It is taking one step at a time. Those steps take us to our intended destination.

God orders every step. Psalm 37:23 states, “The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him.” If we want our steps to be firm, we simply have to delight in God. A wonderful promise and really it is so simple. Have you ever had a friend who you enjoy being around? My friend, Chazzy was a friend who I enjoyed being around with while I was in Zimbabwe. Well, ladies, Jesus is always a true friend who we can enjoy being with. I challenge you to enjoy Him and He will make your steps steady and secure.
Not only does God order our steps, but he establishes our steps. Read Psalm 40:1-2. It states: “I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.” To have our steps established by God, we must wait patiently for Him. When we are patient, God does turn to us. The God of the universe cares so much for us that He turns his face toward us, listen with his ears, use his strong arms to lift us and carry us to the place we need to be. This reminds me of poem, Footprints.

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed He was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from His life. For each scene He noticed two sets of footprints in the sand. One set belonging to Him and the other to the LORD.

When the last scene of His life flashed before Him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of His life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times of His life.

This really bothered Him and He questioned the LORD about it. LORD you said that once I decided to follow you, you’d walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.

The LORD replied, my precious, precious child, I Love you and I would never leave you! During your times of trial and suffering when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

After our steps are established, God directs our steps. Proverbs 16:9 states “A man’s heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.” This past March, Steve and I vacationed in Costa Rica. This was the first time we went on vacation with a tour group. We had a wonderful tour guide named Dani. She showed us many beautiful places in Costa Rica. Our vacation was in her hands. Friend, God is our tour guide. We can plan our way, and when we walk with Him, He is our guide. Our life is in His hands. He shows us many wonderful places.

God does direct our steps. Our responsibility is to follow. 1 Peter 2:21 states, “To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his steps.” When my grandchildren visit, I love to play games with them. We have played “follow the leader.” It is fun to walk around and have the grandchildren follow my example. Our example is Jesus. In fact, He was the perfect example and if we would only follow Him, our life will stay on the course, He has planned for us.

Ladies, our Christian walk is made up of steps. Our steps are in God’s hands. He orders our steps, He establishes our steps and He directs our steps. We just need to follow His steps. Then we are on the path that He has planned for us. Let God lead your steps!

Every time I go on my twenty minute walk around the block, I remember my sweet friend Chazzy and her devotional on steps.
