Food for thought…have fervent love for one another

fervent love

” Above all things, have fervent love for one another, for love will cover a multitude of sins” 1 Peter 4:8

Often times because we attend church, we read our Bible, we pray, we just assume that we are following what the Bible teaches.  We don’t take the effort to actually ask God to make us loving, to make us patient, to make us compassionate.   We know that we are supposed to have those character traits, so we assume that we do.

My husband is an example to me in so many ways.  I never hear him talk badly about anyone.  I never hear him complain about anyone.  In the most wearisome and difficult circumstances he never loses his patience with people.  Last year, someone went out of their way to be rude to him, not only was this person rude to him but he ridiculed him in front of a large group of people.  I was livid, and I had a lot of things that I wanted to say to this man for his behavior.  But I watched my husband as he never reviled in return, he never lost his patience, he never said a bad word about this person.  He actually went above any beyond and invited this person over for dinner, and asked me to buy his family a Christmas gift! What?! A Christmas gift!!! Are you nuts, did you not hear how badly he treated you???

My husband responded with “I still love him the same” How could he love him? It occurred to me that only through Jesus could my husband love this man, and because he loved this man, he covered his sin.  Fervent love. It means zealous love.  Do you zealously love people?

You see ladies, there is a difference between having the Holy Spirit and being filled with the Holy Spirit.  When we are filled with His Spirit, fervent love is what flows out of us.  When we are filled with His Spirit, we will cover one another’s sins because of the love that we will have for each other.  When we are filled with His Spirit, forgiveness is what will flow from our lives.

I pray that today you would be captivated by Jesus, that His Spirit would completely consume you and that His grace and love would flow out of you.
