Food for thought…. Love is genuine

My friend Deb wrote to me the other day talking about love. It really ministered to me, especially because we live in a world that doesn’t genuinely love.  I say that not to be critical, but if people loved the way that God designed for them to, you wouldn’t have millions of children in the foster care system, you wouldn’t have parents killing their children, you would have a world that is so empty.

We all want to be loved, and as a Christian we are called to love one another, just as Christ loves us.  His love is genuine, it is real and it doesn’t change towards us.  Love requires sacrifice, courage, commitment, and letting our hearts be transformed by the Holy Spirit so that we CAN love, and so that His love shines through us.  Without love, we are nothing “Though I speak with the tongue of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become a sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.” 1 Corinthians 13:1.

One time we went to this outreach at the park near our house.  Our church had a tent sent up and my husband and the church worship team played.  We handed out tracts and invited people to church, hoping to share the love of Jesus with others.  A very angry “Christian” woman walked up and said to one of our church members “Can you speak in tongues?”  Our church member responded by saying “no I cant” and the angry woman then said “WELL I CAN!!” and she walked away bitter and annoyed.  What reason was there to be angry? NONE. What was she missing? She was missing love.  She may be able to speak in tongues, she may have the gift of prophecy, but without love, she has nothing.  She pridefully proclaimed her spiritual gift of tongues, but because she had no love, she was nothing but a noise, a clanging cymbal, bitter and angry over nothing, not able to shine for Jesus to a lost world.  Without love, we are bankrupt.

Let us be filled with Him, let us choose to be His disciples, to love beyond measure, to shine to our family, friends, and the dying world around us.  May we live the love of Christ. Genuinely ask God to give you an abundant love for others, I promise that it will change your life!
