Food for thought….The greatest of these is love.

I cor 13-13

“And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”  I Corinthians 13:13

I have been married for 17 years.  I remember back to the beginning with those giddy feelings toward each other that we called love.  I’m sure you can remember yours too.

Well, before we were married I had several wedding showers.  Many people shared their best gift of advice for a long and loving marriage.

Even though it’s been over 17 years since those showers, I still distinctly remember one piece of advice that really stuck with me.  It was from a  wise woman that had been married for several years, had grown children, and grandchildren.  When she spoke, I listened.  I wanted to take that advice because she had been there, done that.

Her advice was this, “Love is not just a feeling or emotion.  It’s a choice.  A choice to love the other person when they are not being loving back, a choice to put their needs above your own because that’s what the Word of God calls us to do.   It’s a choice to forgive and to grow and learn from and with each other.  It’s a choice to mend what’s broken and make sacrifice for.  It’s a choice to give and not be selfish.  It’s a choice.”

I loved it.  And I still remember it to this day.  This doesn’t only apply to our marriages, but can apply to  our family, our friendships, our witness, or our day to day acquaintances.

Paul said in vs. 3 “If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”  (I Cor. 13:3)  Let’s strive to love others as God loves them.

Are you choosing to be loving today?  What is the greatest advice you’ve been given for your marriage?
