Food for thought….The Little Foxes that Spoil the Vine

Do you ever wonder how little desires lead to sin, or are you shocked at stories of “strong” christians falling away, or even Pastors or leaders that are entangled in love affairs and ministry shattering controversies?  Me too.

My children love to swim, and they swim in any climate.  So, I am out at the pool almost everyday watching over them.  Around my pool there are flowers and plants that attract bees.  I am not a big fan of bees, so I am always looking for little hives that have started around the ledges in my pool area.  I make sure my husband takes care of them promptly so we don’t get stung…like we do every year!  Well, this year I didn’t notice any little nests around my pool.  I was rejoicing!  Ha!  All was safe, and I didn’t have to tend to bee stings.

Well, one morning I was upstairs looking out over the yard and pool area.  I noticed a LOT of those little bees swarming around the back of my deck.  I couldn’t believe I had been sitting out there, day after day, and I missed all those bees flying around.  They had found a little opening on the side of my deck that was blocked by a storage container.  Here they were working away, and I was oblivious to it all!  The next time I went outside, I went over to the bee area and noticed where they were going in and out.  I headed over to look under our deck to see how big their nest was.  I figured since I hadn’t noticed any bees all summer it couldn’t be that bad.  I figured the size of a baseball maybe.  Well, let me tell you….They had a basketball sized nest hanging off the bottom of our deck, PLUS, a gigantic ground nest that was partially underground and then was about the size of 6 basketballs on the top of the ground.  I couldn’t believe my eyes.  How did it get that big without me noticing a thing!  My heart sank.  How was I ever going to get rid of this enormous nest!?  Ah, yes, call the bee doctor!

Ladies, our hearts can be the same.  We are not exempt from any sin, and when small desires are allowed in little by little…they can lead to sin, and sin, destruction.  James 1:15 states, “Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.”  Have you allowed little desires into your heart today?

Song of Solomon 2:15 says, “Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.”  It’s the little foxes that can squeeze through the smallest holes into the vineyard. It is the little desires that creep in when we aren’t watching. It is the little things that destroy the fruit that Christians bear.

Have you been hurt by someone, and allowed a root of bitterness to creep in? Have you lent your ear to gossip, or watched something on TV that is not pleasing?  Are you dressing in a way to attract attention from someone other than your husband?  Are you holding onto something that the Lord has shown you to prune away?

Great news!  God is merciful and forgiving!  Repent, and prune out those little foxes you’ve allowed in.  Press in toward the Lord, get replenished in the Word of God, and pray fervently.  When we are equipped with these tools, we can be prepared for those little foxes that try to sneak in when we aren’t paying attention.  We will notice those little things that steal our fruit and destroy our vines.

John 15:4,5 says, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”

There is nothing too big for the Lord to handle, so lay it down at his feet.  Ask the Lord to show you any little foxes (or bees) that have entered in where they don’t belong.  Allow the Lord to prune your heart, and watch and wait as good fruit comes forth.
