Food for thought…Wash us

Water. It’s so necessary to our existence. We need to take it in to survive. We cook with it, bathe in it, drink it,….we cannot exist without water. Yet it’s a substance that we, or maybe It’s just me, take for granted. The radio spokesperson on FLN  said the other day that “Americans have more of a cultural issue with showering everyday as opposed to a necessity.” He had heard this finding from a doctor who had inferred that showering daily was not an imperative. When we were little I am sure we all stood there under the running water as long as possible. You would come out and your hands would be like prunes because you had stayed so long in the water. Tonight I considered a verse as the water flowed from the shower.

Psalm 51:7 “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” Everyday it seems I sin in some form. I have an attitude. I want to murmur and complain. So each day my soul needs a shower. I need a washing from The Lord. I need to play those verses again and again. If we say we do not sin the Bible tells us that we lie and the truth is not in us, to deny that we sin is to presume our human frailty can be overcome by sheer willpower.

What a presumption! In fact we are in a quite dangerous place when we don’t see our sin because we have become blind and conviction and awareness of sin is necessary for repentance and forgiveness of sin. So Lord, I pray you would show us our sins, our secret sins that cause us to stray. Without the truth being presented we would never know. Keep our hearts pure and soft so that we may have access to your throne. Wash us. Wash me and we shall be clean!
