Money Saving Monday – Spring Wardrobe

th

It’s been a LONG winter here in NY, and we’ve all been dieting since New Year’s, right?  Are you ready for a new spring wardrobe, or just a few new pieces?  Before you go, check out some of these tips to help you save some cash along the way.

1.  Have a plan!

Before heading out, check for any available coupons to print or any mobile coupons on your phone.  Don’t get distracted at the register and forget to use them!!  You can save an average of 25% with most online coupons.

2.  Take inventory of your closet before you go

Know what you already have and what you are looking for before you head out.  Aimless shopping is just a wast of time and money…and can become a bad habit.  Need ideas for outfits?  Check out Pinterest for outfits you love.  You probably have most of the outfit and just need a shirt or accessory to make it happen.

3.  Be prepared

Bring water and snacks to help curb those costly purchases along the way.  If you’re planning to stop for lunch or dinner, check for restaurant coupons, as well.

4.  Only bring cash

Did I just say that?  Yes, I did.  It will force you stay within your budget you want to spend, no matter how great the deal is.  It will make you say “No” for now.  If you are VERY disciplined, go ahead and take the credit card.  You can actually save an extra 10% or more at some stores with store credit cards.  You can also earn cash back this way.  Just make sure you are disciplined and have the capital to pay it off when the bill comes in.  If you carry a balance at all, you just lost out on all your savings.  Late fees and interest charges will suck you dry, and make you broke!

5.  Go shopping with a partner

Make yourself accountable to a close friend that will help you stay within budget.  You may let yourself slip, but accountability to someone else will help tremendously, and save you money!  They can also help you with what looks good, and what you can pass on.  Oh, and don’t forget to buy her lunch to say “Thank you!”

6.  Swallow your pride, & check the clearance rack first

When you walk in to any store, scan for the clearance rack, and head there first.  Check to see if you can snag something on your list from there.  If you can, score!  That’s more money to spend on other items, or take home and save.

7.  Look for classic pieces

Keep trendy purchases to a minimum.  You’ll end up wearing them once or twice, and they will sit in your closet until next season when you realize the trend is over.  A few trendy pieces are ok, and mix and match well with all those classics you can use again and again.   Make sure you try all pieces on to ensure a great fit before you leave the store.  Do not compromise at all.  Don’t tell yourself you’ll loose a little more to fit into it.  If it doesn’t look great, don’t buy it.  Just “okay” pieces should never have room in your closet.

8.  Review your cart

Look over all the items in your cart before you make that choice to spend your cash.  Take my spending quiz below to check yourself before you trade in your cash.

9.  It’s not too late

If you get home, and regret a purchase, don’t be afraid to take it back.  Stores do it everyday, all day.  No big deal!

10.  Add your purchases to your budget

Keep track of what you spent so you can look back for future budgeting.  This can also help to ensure you are not spending too much of your salary on clothing purchases.
