Soft Homemade Bread

I got this recipe from a friend of mine who was a Mennonite.  This bread is super soft and my family begs me to make it at all of our gatherings.  You’ll love it, and it also makes great gifts.  The recipe make 4 loaves.  I make a batch on Sunday night and it lasts all week for breakfast and lunches! You’ll love it. D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S!!

Homemade Bread Recipe

3  3/4 cups warm water (not hot)

2 tablespoons of yeast

1/3 cup shortening

1/2 cup sugar

1 tsp salt

9 cups high gluten flour( I’ve used regular flour and I prefer the high gluten for softness but regular will work also)

Mix all ingredients except for the flour.  I mix them in my kitchen aid mixer with a bread hook.  Otherwise you will have to mix by hand or in your bosch mixer.  Once you have mixed them , add 5 cups of flour and mix.  Then slowly add 1 cup at a time for the last 4 cups.  Mix until its smooth.  Let rise 20 minutes, and punch down.  Let rise again for 20-30 minutes and then place in 4 greased bread pans.  Let rise till doubled (to top of the pans).  Bake at 350 for 10 minutes, turn down to 325 and bake for an additional 15 minutes.  Tap the tops, they should sound hollow, they’re done.  Cool before cutting.  Place into bread bags when they’re a tad bit warm still and it will make the outside super soft also.  You can freeze these and warm them up when ready to use or else keep them in air tight bags till you’re ready to use.
