Let’s check out the facts:
-On average, Americans spend $2.1 billion on Easter candy each year(they obviously don’t use coupons!!)
-Americans spent $14.6 billion dollars on Easter related goods
-Easter is the 2nd biggest candy eating holiday in America (Halloween is #1)
-Americans will consume a total of 16 billion pounds of jelly beans this Easter
We have turned Easter (just like Christmas) into a non-spiritual holiday. We have turned it into candy eating and egg hunting, we have replaced Jesus with the easter bunny.
What is Easter?
I asked my oldest 3 kids what the meaning of Easter is, 2 of them got it right. Easter is the day the Jesus Christ rose from the grave. You see, He was sent to earth to die for our sins. 1 John 2:2 “Jesus is the propitiation for our sins, not only for us but for the whole world” and through His death ALONE we have access to God. “Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man comes to the Father except by me” John 14:6. But there’s more….He died, and on the third day He rose again. “He was buried and rose on the third day” 1 Corinthians 15:4.
John 20:3 describes the empty tomb…… “Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.”
“I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore.” Revelation 1:18
You see, Jesus is alive. He came to give us life. He was sent by God to earth to die for the sins of mankind (and we all have sinned, have you ever lied even once? You have sinned) Jesus came to redeem you from those sins so that you have access to God, and your gift is in eternity with Him in heaven. The tomb was empty, He rose from the grave and He is alive forevermore. Ask yourself this….do you believe that? Your eternity will depend on your answer. Send me a message if you have more questions. Let’s remind ourselves of what the meaning of Easter is. Not the candy, not the eggs, not the Easter bunny. But our precious Savior dying and living again…for you, and for me!
